Step-by-Step: Monologue Self-Tape Auditions
*This workshop is donation based - a donation of any amount reserves your spot*
In this workshop, we’ll walk through the monologue self-tape audition step by step, from choosing the right material to delivering a confident, grounded performance on camera.
We’ll cover how to select monologues that showcase you, how to rehearse effectively on your own, and practical tools for shaping a performance that stands out. We’ll also break down the technical and performance do’s and don’ts of self-taping, so you know exactly what casting teams are looking for - and what to avoid.
Actors who come prepared with a monologue will have the opportunity to perform their piece and get feedback. You are not required to bring a prepared piece and are welcome to observe.
This workshop also serves as strong preparation for our Conservatory audition, as the expectations, structure, and coaching mirror the self-tape process used in that selection.
Who this is for:
Actors preparing monologue self-tapes, actively auditioning, or getting ready to audition for our Conservatory.
What to bring:
A memorized monologue if you’d like to perform and receive coaching. Observers and those still selecting material are welcome. There’s a lot to gain from watching others work, and you can fully participate in the first half of the workshop, which will be a valuable conversation around all of these topics.
About the Teacher
Jack Schultz has been the proud owner of Green Shirt Studio since 2019, where he's logged thousands of hours in the classroom guiding students of all experience levels through Levels 1–5 of Green Shirt’s Meisner Acting Program. His passion for training actors is matched only by his love for building community—something he took to the next level in 2023 when he co-founded Chicago Actor Staffing with his wife and creative partner, Alison Schaufler.
About the Teacher
Alison began taking classes at Green Shirt in 2020, graduated from the Meisner Acting Program in 2021, and completed Green Shirt’s Teacher Training Program in 2025. In Chicago, she has performed with companies such as Pulse, Right Brain Project, The Agency Theater Collective, and Instrumental Theatre Company. She also tours nationally with her band Bess and Marley, performing at Renaissance Faires across the country - including the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Wisconsin. Come see her this season! Before moving to Chicago, Alison studied theatre at Skidmore College, where she trained with acclaimed SITI Company's Will Bond. After graduation, she toured with Hampstead Stage performing improv and children’s theatre, and she also trained with Synetic Theater Company in Washington, D.C. Alison is passionate about work with a big heart that doesn’t take itself too seriously. She’s thrilled to join the Green Shirt instructor team and share her love of performance while helping others take meaningful steps toward their own acting goals.
