  • Physical Freedom: Becoming More Open, Responsive, and Available

An Introduction to the Williamson Technique, The Physical Process of Communication in Acting

What would it feel like to get out of your own way and become more physically free, present, and responsive in your acting?

This experiential workshop will introduce you to the Williamson Physical Technique, a movement-based approach to actor training designed to help you release unnecessary tension, deepen your connection to your body and senses, and respond more freely to the people and world around you.

Through guided movement, breath, sensory exploration, and partner exercises, we’ll explore how physical habits and tension can sometimes limit expression — and practice tools for becoming more open, connected, and available to whatever is happening in the moment.

Developed by Loyd Williamson and informed by his work with Sanford Meisner, Martha Graham, and Maggie Black, the Williamson Technique grew alongside Meisner training and shares its emphasis on truthful, spontaneous behavior. The work helps actors strengthen the connection between what they take in, what they experience, and how that experience naturally expresses itself through the body.

Whether you’re looking to feel less physically “stuck,” become more present with a scene partner, access your impulses more freely, or simply deepen your connection to your body as an actor, this workshop will give you practical tools you can bring into your acting work.

No previous experience with Williamson — or Meisner — is necessary. Actors at any stage of their training are welcome.

This workshop offers an introduction to Rachael Yoder’s upcoming eight-week Williamson course at Green Shirt Studio in 2027.
